Rogue Local

I help small businesses in Barrow County get found on Google. I set up and run your Google Business Profile, fix the local search basics, and help you earn more real reviews from the customers you already have.

I grew up in Barrow County, and I also run About Barrow, the county’s free business directory. That second part matters, so I explain it further down this page instead of hiding it.

What this is and who it is for

Rogue Local is the local arm of my consultancy, Rogue Pine. Rogue Pine works with companies doing $2M to $50M in revenue on bigger revenue and marketing problems. Rogue Local is a smaller, simpler thing built for the businesses I actually live next to.

This is for you if:

  • You run a business in Barrow County. Winder, Auburn, Statham, Bethlehem, Braselton, Carl, and the places in between. I grew up in Barrow County, so I am close enough to drive to you.
  • Someone searching “plumber near me” or “best tacos in Winder” should be finding you and is not.
  • Your Google listing is out of date, unclaimed, half empty, or you have never touched it.
  • You know reviews matter and you have no system for asking for them.
  • You would rather talk to a person in your county than a call center in another state.

This is probably not for you if you want a big brand campaign, a rebrand, or paid ads managed at scale. That is different work, and I will tell you so rather than sell you something that does not fit.

What you get

There are two things. Most businesses need the first one once, then decide whether they want the second.

Google Business Profile setup

$499 one time

A full pass on your Google presence so it is claimed, correct, and working.

  • Claim or recover your Google Business Profile, including the awkward cases where an old owner or a former employee still controls it
  • Fill out every field Google actually uses: categories, services, hours, service area, attributes, description
  • Fix your name, address and phone so they match everywhere they appear
  • Load your photos properly and tell you which ones to take if you do not have good ones
  • Set up a simple, honest way to ask customers for reviews
  • Walk through your current position in local search and what is holding it down
  • A short written summary at the end so you own the work, whether or not you keep working with me

Ongoing management

$299 per month

For businesses that want someone keeping the plate spinning instead of letting it fall again.

  • Regular posts and updates to your profile so it stays active
  • Help replying to reviews, the good ones and the bad ones
  • Watching your rating and review count and telling you plainly when something moves
  • A steady review request process, so asking becomes a habit instead of a panic
  • Small website fixes when they are what is holding you back
  • A monthly note from me on what changed and what I would do next

No contract length. Tell me to stop and I stop at the end of the month.

Other ways I can help

Google is where most local businesses should start, and it is what the prices above cover. I also do two other kinds of work for local businesses:

  • Websites. A new site, or a rebuild of one that is not bringing in calls.
  • Business consulting. Help with pricing, sales, marketing, or whatever is holding your business back.

These are priced after we talk, because every business needs something different. Ask me about them on the call.

The same rules on this page apply to all of it. If you hire me for any of this, your About Barrow listing says so, and none of it moves your ranking.

The About Barrow question

Here is the thing I need to say out loud and early.

I run About Barrow. It is a free, independent directory and publication for Barrow County, and it ranks more than 350 local businesses across 13 categories. I also sell local marketing help through Rogue Local. So a fair question is whether paying me buys you a better spot in my own directory.

It does not. Here is exactly why, and you do not have to take my word for any of it.

1

The ranking formula is published

About Barrow ranks businesses on one thing: your Google star rating, weighted by how many reviews you have. No opinion of mine enters it. No score I made up. The formula is written out at aboutbarrow.com/method/ so anyone can pull a business’s Google rating and review count and check the ranking for themselves.

That is the strongest protection I can offer, because it makes cheating checkable instead of a thing you have to trust me about.

2

Client relationships are shown on the listing itself

If you hire me, a short factual line goes on your About Barrow listing saying so, along with a note that it earns you no ranking preference. Readers see it right on the listing instead of three clicks deep in a policy page.

This is what a newspaper does when it writes about an advertiser. Some businesses will not want that marker, and they will not hire me. I decided that is a price worth paying.

3

The policy is this page

The whole policy lives on this page, so there is nothing to go hunting for. What I sell, what it costs, what it cannot do, and the things I will never do for any client are all written below, on the page where I am asking for your business. If I ever change any of it, I change it here.

The sentence that carries the whole thing: rankings come from Google’s data, the formula is fixed and public, and paying me cannot move your listing except by the one route that is open to every business in the county, which is actually earning more and better reviews.

Why I tell you instead of hiding it

I grew up here. I graduated from Winder Barrow High School. In a county this size, a quiet relationship between the directory and the marketing guy gets found out, and the day it gets found out is much worse than the day I explained it. So I explained it.

And honestly, most of this work is straightforward. The About Barrow formula rewards businesses that are genuinely good and genuinely reviewed. Helping a good business collect the real reviews it has already earned is the directory doing its job.

A plumber with a 4.9 and eleven reviews probably should outrank one with a 4.4 and four hundred, and the only honest way for him to get there is to go collect the reviews his customers were happy to leave.

What I will never do

Not for any client. Not at any price. Not if you ask nicely and not if you offer more money.

  1. No fake reviews. Ever. Not written by me, not bought, not traded.
  2. No paying for or rewarding only positive reviews. Asking a customer for an honest review is fine, and paying for a five star one is off the table.
  3. No review gating. I will not screen your customers first and send only the happy ones to your public review page.
  4. No hiding or burying negative reviews. I will help you write a good reply and leave the review where it is.
  5. No changing the About Barrow ranking formula. Not ever, for any reason connected to a client. The formula is public and it stays that way.
  6. No paid placement, featured slots or promoted listings in About Barrow. Placement is permanently not for sale. That is written on the method page, not just here.
  7. No removing or demoting your competitor. Your competitor’s listing is none of my business and none of yours.

The Federal Trade Commission has a rule on consumer reviews and testimonials that is final and being enforced, and the practices it names include fake reviews and paying for only positive ones. Those are on my list above because they are wrong, and the rule is another reason nobody should be doing them. I am not a lawyer and this page is not legal advice. I am telling you where I operate.

Why hire someone local

Here is the honest version of this argument.

Any good agency can do the Google work. Being local adds one thing no national agency has: I run the county’s directory. I already have the rating and review data for every Barrow County business in the directory, which is more than 350 of them across 13 categories.

So before you pay me anything, I can show you:

  • Exactly where you rank in your category right now
  • Which businesses are above you and what their numbers look like
  • The specific gap, in stars or in review count, between you and the spot you want
  • Whether your problem is your rating, your review volume, or a listing that is simply not filled out

An agency in another state has to guess at that or buy a report about it. I already have it, and I will walk you through yours on a call whether or not you hire me.

The other real part: I can come see your business. I know where Winder is. I know which streets people actually search. When you call me, you get me, because there is nobody else here.

Common questions

How long until I see something change?

Listing fixes can show up in days. Review growth is slower because it depends on real customers leaving real reviews, and that takes a few months to build into a habit. I would rather tell you that now than promise you a number I made up.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No. Setup is a one time $499. Management is $299 a month and you can stop at the end of any month.

Will hiring you move me up in About Barrow?

Only in the one way that works for everybody. The ranking is your Google rating weighted by your review count. If we help you earn more and better reviews, your position can improve because your Google numbers improved. I cannot and will not touch the formula.

Will people see that I am your client?

Yes. A short line goes on your About Barrow listing saying you are a Rogue Local client and that it gives you no ranking preference. If that is a dealbreaker, this is not going to work.

Can you write reviews for me?

No. See the list above.

What if I already have somebody doing my marketing?

Then you probably do not need me, and I will say so. If you want a second opinion on your local search specifically, I am happy to look.

Do you only work with Barrow County businesses?

Rogue Local is built for Barrow County and the towns right around it. If you are further out, ask me anyway and I will tell you honestly whether I can help.

Is this the same as Rogue Pine?

Yes, Rogue Local is Rogue Pine’s local arm. Same person, smaller scope, prices built for a small local business instead of a $20M one.

Let’s talk

Book a call. On that call I will pull up your category in About Barrow, show you where you sit, and tell you what I think is holding you down. If that is all you take from the conversation, that is fine with me.
